Schools near floodplains to be relocated

The security and safety department at the Ministry of Education is surveying schools that are located near floodplains, in an effort to relocate them to safer sites, an official at the ministry said. Majed Al-Harbi, general director of the security and safety department, said the ministry has requested education departments throughout the Kingdom to identify schools in dangerous locations.
The survey, explained Al-Harbi, will include information about schools that were damaged in the past by floods, and the procedures undertaken to address the problem.
The move comes within the framework of the Education Ministry’s restructuring initiative, which entails the establishment of two new departments for emergency and school safety.
The two new departments aim to maintain the safety of male and female students and eliminate threats to their well-being.
“We aim to ensure students are not affected by the changing weather conditions,” Al-Harbi said.
“The Ministry has prepared a comprehensive guide, which illustrates the ways of dealing with emergency cases arising from extreme weather conditions,” added the official.
He pointed out that extreme weather conditions require rapid intervention to maintain the safety of students and the academic faculty, and address the complications that may arise in the aftermath.
During the first forum for school safety, Education Minister Prince Faisal bin Abdullah announced the ministry’s preparedness to deal with such conditions, stressing that the ministry is undertaking new steps to ensure that student safety is a priority.
During the forum three research papers were presented on the safety measures and evacuation procedures that should be adopted by schools in such conditions.
